Comments: My hometown ran this article in this morning's paper. Perhaps you can help pass the word. Diver seeks owner of ring found in Lake George Published on 7/17/2002 By JOHN GEREAU gereau@poststar.com LAKE GEORGE -- Somewhere there is an ex-U.S. Army infantryman who is missing a memento from the time he spent in service to his country. An area diver plucked the keepsake from the floor of Lake George and has made it his personal mission to reunite the item with its rightful owner. Glenmont (Albany County) diver Bryce Johnson was perusing the depths of Lake George a few weeks ago with a group of friends when his flashlight beam bounced off something shiny in about 85 feet of water, not far from Dome Island. The object turned out to be a U.S. Army infantry ring of unknown age bearing the inscription "In memory of Gail Casey." Johnson, a former Marine, said he understands the importance of the ring. He's traced the insignia on one side of the ring to the 173rd Infantry Brigade -- a unit that served in Vietnam. The insignia resembles a blue shield with a sword across the bottom, and the words "Follow Me" across the top. The ring also bears the name of the manufacturer -- R. Johns Ltd. -- but reveals no other clues about its owner. Johnson said he's called the headquarters of the U.S Army infantry at Fort Benning, Ga., as well as the ring's manufacturer with little result. He's also spent more than 40 hours searching the Internet looking for clues about who the owner may be. "If it was mine, I'd be really upset that I lost this ring," Johnson said. "So I'm going to do everything in my power to get it back to its rightful owner. But I've kind of hit a dead end." William McGarr, director of Veterans' Services for Warren County, also said the ring likely meant a lot to its owner. "He probably got it when he first was assigned to the 173rd," he said. "I would think whoever did lose it would be very happy to get it back." McGarr surmised that Gail Casey may have been someone that served in Vietnam with the owner of the ring and possibly was killed in action, but a list of those killed in action in Vietnam failed to turn up the name. NewsChannel 13 aired the story about the ring late last week and has since fielded dozens of calls and e-mails from citizens interesting in helping to locate the ring's owner, said John Allen, a WNYT-TV newscaster. Anyone with information about the ring may contact Allen at 518-207-4827 or via e-mail at jallen@wnyt.com. The information will be passed on to Johnson.

I am presently looking for written accounts, either written at the time of the Vietnam War or written in retrospective format. I am considering publishing a book of people's accounts of Vietnam, Laos or other conflicts and would like to try and collect as many different stories as possible. The more personal the story, the better. You can either e-mail me any story you might have or e-mail me and I will send you my mailing address.

Comments: A Nam Vet sent the link to your site tonight and it is one of the most complete and thorough I've seen yet covering all military, links for anything a vet would need, and information covering all wars. Thank you for the work you have put into this site, the dedication that shows here, and welcome home to all Vietnam Vets from an American citizen and an current Air Force mom.
