my search for Vietnam info about my Dad. His name is Joe Kramer and
he was in the 62nd Co D. (Crane Shovel Operator) in

I was wondering if there is a way I could post something on your

I was a member of the Co. A, 62nd
Engineer Construction Battalion from
late 1955 through 1958, at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. At that
time we were a
part of the ?? Group along with the 5th Engineers, one or two
heavy
construction companies and a pipline company. I believe
the 515th
Construction BattaIion was also there. I served with the
62th for a year
or so, then was TDY to the 18th Engineer Brigade, and later
transferred to
their headquarters. All this was at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO
between late
1955 and July of 1958 when I was discharged.

Mike Cangro, I saw your message and am
wondering if I know you. I served with the 62nd engineering batallion in
nam from 1968 to 1969. My memory is almost completely gone but I am
hoping you remember me. I was in Long Bien and I was there when the TET
began. I am african american; I used to drive the captain around too;
there was a captain who I remember being wounded but his name escapes
me. I want to say it was Baumgardner(sp) but we have not been able to
come up with anyone with that name. Would appreciate hearing from you.

Mike Fitton was
a bulldozer operator, 62nd engineer battalion, Phan Rang, in 65/66. I've
developed all kinds of medical problems from what I believe to be agent
orange. I have psorriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure &
high cholesterol. I remember being sprayed by c130's flying overhead in
110 degree weather, it felt good but I found out later it was probably
agent orange. Has anyone else experienced these physical problems? I
called the VA, they said it's classified information that I'm trying to
find out. thank you, in advance.

I also made a post today, 12/1/04, on the 62nd message board.

others were reassigned all over the post.

Baccus I was also on
the LST going to Phan Rang. I was the senior medic Sp5 later Sp6 with
the Bn. I arrived at Ft Leonard Wood about 6 mo prior to our
deployment to RVN. I stayed in the Army for 30+ yrs retiring as a
Physician Assistant, CW4. I can't say I had a good time, but as luck
will have it few of the Bn guys got seriously hurt and no one was
shot. I returned to RVN in 1968 and worked in a very busy emergency
room in the 12 Evac. We treated 100-300 casualties a day. I will
return to this site frequently and would like to hear from some of the
original guys who were there.

I was with one of the first groups there. I
drove a dump truck, operated a crane, finished concrete, along with
other jobs. It is hard to recall names after all the years, but if I
had a listing I'm sure I would remember.
It would be interesting to get back in touch with some of the guys to
see what has happened with them through the years. Any information
would be greatly appreciated.
Hynote was the man who taught me how to run a crane, and I would like
to know if anyone knows where he is now or has heard anything from
him. Thanks, Jack

Retired I was the S-3 of the 31st Combat Engr who boxed the 62nd Colors
in Vietnam and oversaw the 60th and 984th LCC's till their stand down in
1972. On reassignment to the states I helped activate the USASMA
and then went to
Hood to be S-3 during the 62nd conversion to Combat Heavy. I was
there
form 1975 to 1978.
Bob, I was in the 31st Engineer Bn 71/72. The unit
constructed a steel pile, concrete bridge on QL 1 just at the Two
Core border. We were also the repository for draw down units.
At one point we had a mine rolling tank, a mine dog paltoon, a separate
construction support company, two LCC from the 62th, A Company
from the 64th plus enough rolling stock to transport two land clearing
companies. We had our three combat companies and at times went
over 2000 in strength. We called our self the 31st Combat Engr
Regt. The unit constructed several FSB for the 11th ACR and many
general support activities.

I was assigned to HHC, 62
EBC at Ft. Leonard Wood in January, 1965 as a radio operator, and
shipped out with the Battalion in August, first on the troop train to
Oakland (at our stop in Salt Lake City, a couple of buddies and I
managed to sneak off and buy a case of beer) and of course the good old
USNS Gen. R.M. Blatchford (I swear I'll never forget that name!). After
we landed at Cam Ranh, I was assigned by the Commo officer, Lt. Messer,
to go to Phan Rang with the advance party. Since I was the only commo
guy in the advance party, communications with Battalion back in Cam Ranh
were my sole resposibility, a situation that scared the hell out of me!!
After my tour was up in August '66, I flew commercial from Tan Son Nhut
to Clark, to Oakland. I was too short to reassign, so I was REFRADed and
sent home.
The war is still with me however, as I was diagnosed with prostate
cancer in January, 2001. The Dept. of Veterans Affairs recently approved
me for Service Connected Disability for the cancer based on my exposure
to Agent Orange in Nam.
I was a member of the advance party
sent down to Phan Rang from Cam Ranh in September ahead of the rest of
the battalion. If memory serves, there were about 80 of us, and our
mission was to survey and set up a perimeter for the battalion base
camp. We were there a week or ten days before the rest of the 62nd
joined us. I was a radio operator, and the only communications guy in
the advance party. I had a 3/4 ton with a GRC-19 mounted in the back and
slept in the back of the truck with the radio on in case we got called.
I remember being pretty scared because the rumors were that Charlie had
control of the area, but actually, nothing happened.
I was there until I rotated back home and was REFRADed out at
Oakland in August '66. By that time, the base had grown from a single
PSP strip to paved runways and taxiways, the Air Force was there with
F-4s, and the 101st Airborne had established their base camp in the area
as well.

Phan Rhang ended up being the largest airbase in Vietnam thats all. 10
square miles of perimiter. Guard towers around the entire base every 300
or so yards. What a place!! It was pretty much abandoned though as I was
one of the last to leave. (Sept. 72 - Mar. 73) I remember hunting snakes
at night on the abandoned runways.
Those were the days!!!!!!!!!
